If you cannot take a fortnight off, you do not own a business yet. Ask an independent retailer when they last had two consecutive weeks away from the shop. The pauses tell the story.
Owner dependency is the quiet constraint on most small retail businesses. It caps growth, it destroys resale value, and it is the main reason owners burn out in a trade they once loved.
It builds gradually. You do the ordering because you are fastest. You handle the difficult supplier because you know them. You do the banking because it is easier than explaining it. Each decision is sensible on its own. Together they make you the single point of failure.
Undoing it is unglamorous work.
Start by writing down what only you do. Everything: opening, ordering, banking, rosters, supplier contacts, promotion setup, invoice checking, end of month. Most owners are surprised by the length of that list.
Then, for each item, decide whether it can be documented, delegated, simplified or stopped. Some tasks exist only because they always have.
Document the routine ones as one-page instructions a competent staff member can follow. Not a manual. A page. Written in your words, with the specific detail that makes it work in your shop.
Delegate one task per month, properly. That means training, then letting go, then checking the outcome rather than the method. Taking it back at the first imperfect attempt teaches your team that delegation is theatre.
Build a second decision-maker. Someone who can order, handle a supplier problem and manage a day without calling you. Pay them accordingly. It is cheaper than the alternative.
Then test it. Take a week off. Notice exactly what breaks, and fix that. Take a fortnight next time.
Two things follow. Your business becomes more valuable, because a buyer is purchasing an operation rather than your personal presence. And you get your life back, which is usually the reason people bought a shop in the first place.
We help members work through this, including which tasks to hand over first and how to structure the reporting so you stay informed without being involved in everything.
