Wages are the second largest cost in most shops and the easiest one to get wrong. Awards change. Penalty rates apply differently across weekends and public holidays. Juniors, casuals, part-timers and salaried staff each carry their own rules. Most owners are not payroll specialists and never intended to be.
The newsXpress AI ChatBot accurately answers this information for members 24/7. Wage rate advice has never been easier to access for newsagents and indie retailers.
Guessing is expensive. Underpayment claims are recovered with interest and reputational damage. Overpayment is a silent margin drain that nobody notices because the staff are hardly going to raise it.
A few habits reduce the risk considerably.
Work from the actual award, not from what the previous owner did. Inherited pay practices are one of the most common sources of error in shops that change hands.
Keep classifications current. Staff who take on more responsibility, or who pass an age threshold, may move up a level. That change does not happen automatically in your payroll.
Understand your penalty and loading structure before you build the roster, not after. Roster design is where wage cost is actually decided. A small change in who works Sunday can matter more than a whole month of cost cutting elsewhere.
Keep proper records. Hours worked, breaks, leave accrued and payslips issued. If a dispute ever arises, records are the difference between a short conversation and a long one.
Review wages as a percentage of sales monthly, by week if you can. Most shops carry their peak staffing at times that no longer match their peak trade, because the roster was built years ago around a trading pattern that has since shifted.
The Fair Work Ombudsman publishes current pay rates, award summaries and templates at fairwork.gov.au. It is the authoritative source and it is free. Check it against your payroll at least once a year, and any time the award is updated.
Members have access to our closed loop retail chatbot, which answers questions on pay rates, rostering and other operating matters and provides citations, including links straight to government sources so you can verify anything yourself in seconds.
